The country depicted in this painting is the country of John’s father, which is far to the South of Balgo in the Great Sandy Desert. The country is close to the massive salt lake, Wilkinkarra or Lake Mackay.
The flat black areas are the small salt pans that are found close to Wilkinkarra, which are surrounded by talis or sand dunes.
The Tjukurrpa (dreamtime) story for the area tells of a big celebration when an old man, who had too many wives, including his own daughter was killed by men and women using nulla nullas and goodroo (two types of hitting sticks).
John’s father would sing the song for this story to John when he was a young man.
