Most Aboriginal art relates to stories of the Dreamtime, “Tjukurpa”. The Dreamtime is the creation period in Aboriginal belief, when Ancestral Beings formed the land and created the people, the plants and the animals. The particularities of the Dreamtime vary between different Indigenous groups across Australia but its core ethos is ever present. Often depicted in the art, these Ancestral Beings may take human, animal, plant or combined forms. They taught the people their laws and ceremonies. The Dreamtime stories depicted in Aboriginal art reveal centuries of history, and demonstrate a respect and passion for their culture, as well as a detailed knowledge of the land which occupies a very sacred place in the hearts of all Indigenous people.
ReDot Fine Art Gallery is proud to be exhibiting a stunning selection of pieces to give the art lover an up close look into these sacred rituals. The works of ‘Dreamtime Stories’ are grounded in strong cultural knowledge whilst executed in a contemporary and modern style, allowing the pieces to stand strongly alongside any western comparison and indeed drawing parallels with many established artists from all around the world. Sandhills and waterholes, meeting places and sacred sites are all depicted in abstract, raw, colourful, sometimes naive, sometimes intense, maps of land and country. We invite anyone fascinated by indigenous art and culture to step into a world that is familiar in its simplicity but memorizing in its depth and wonder. The living stories virtually leap off each canvas.
