‘Waterfall this one here, that water coming down to Bow River. This [red shape] going to Gawinji, Cattle Creek. And this yellow part, that Emu Spring, Wanganabany. That old snake, that black – head snake where we eat ‘im. That ‘dawyan dawyan’ la that Garnkiny.’

This country is on Texas Downs station. Texas is Cann’s traditional country. It is the Dreaming place for the black-headed snake. This snake is important to the Garnkiny Ngarrangkarni – Moon Dreaming. In the Ngarrangkarni, the moon was a man who fell in love with a woman of Nambin skin. When asked by his elders which woman of Nyawana skin he would take as his wife, he replied ‘dawyan dawyan’ (that one, that one) pointing to Nambin. He was refused as it was taboo for him to marry her because she was his mother-in-law in Gija kinship laws. Garnkiny cursed mankind, promising that when they died, they would be gone forever but he would come back to life every month as the moon. Nambin is now the black-headed snake.
