The garoré (black tree fern) grows only on the highest ridges of the Ömie mountains. The fronds of a tree fern are known as stipes and the tall, narrow trunk of tree ferns are covered in stipe bases. Where old stipe bases have fallen away inside you can see new roots emerging. Sarah has painted the design of these new roots growing inside the stipe base hollows of the black tree fern (large zig-zag design). The diamond-shaped design inside the zig-zags are siha’e - the fruit from the tree.
