This is the story about Wichetty Grub Dreaming. In the Dreamtime, Wichetty Grub came from Yarlukarri and travelled under the ground, making holes from which he emerged. In the Dreamtime the Grubs came out and crawled around on the surface. The Dreamtime woman saw the holes from which the Grubs emerged, underneath the witchetty trees. The women split open the roots, took out the Grubs then buried them in the ground. That way the witchetty grubs were cooked. The Dreaming travelled north, just as these Dreaming Women did when they went hunting.
As they went, those Dreamtime women made digging sticks to collect the surplus. They all lived on witchetty grubs. Whitefellows call the grub ‘witchetty’ but we Aborigines call them Ngalkirdi. Witchetty grubs are very nourishing and can be eaten cooked or raw and are edible in all phases of their life cycle. The concentric circles represent the holes in the ground, while the ‘U’ shapes represent humans and the ‘S’ shape witchetty grubs. Both yapakurlangu wirilya (human’s footprints) and karlangu (digging sticks) are shown as graphic representation. The Japaljarri/Jungarrayi men are the owners of this Dreaming, along with their Napaljarri/Nungarrayi classificatory sisters.
