This is the story about Turkey and Emu, who lived in the Dreamtime. Turkey lived at Parirri rock hole, north-west of Yuendumu, and Emu lived at Walangkamiriri, west of Parirri. They liked to gather Yakajirri berries and make them into big fruit balls. As Turkey gathered fruit he began to go further west to Ngarliyikirlangu. Again and again he went gathering berries, going further and choosing the best ones and putting them into wooden dishes (coolamons).
When the dishes were full he would make the berries into fruit balls. He was acting as though those berries were his, but in fact they belonged to Emu. Emu was gathering berries and also making them into fruit balls. When he straightened up he saw Turkey. He was angry. “Here he is walking around in my place, robbing me of all my berries.” The next day he had it out with Turkey. He ran and snatched the berries from Turkey and smashed them, splitting them into many pieces. These fruit balls turned into big round boulders that you can see in that country today. After he had smashed all Turkey’s fruit balls, Emu went away to another place.
Turkey was very upset so he set off west to go and find Emu. When he found Emu, they started fighting again. Emu grabbed hold of Turkey, filled his eyes with dirt. Unable to see, Turkey flew away, blindly, north across the sky, leaving behind berries, wooden dishes and shield.
To this day, the fruit balls stand there as rocky hills and boulders spread all over the ground.
