Artist | ELAINE WARNATJURA LANE

Elaine Warnatjura Lane was born near a rock hole circa 1940 and paints for Papulankutja Artists, a indigenous owned cooperative established in 2001 out of Blackstone’s women’s centre.

Blackstone is situated in Western Australia between the Gibson Desert and the Great Victoria Desert at the foot of the picturesque Blackstone Ranges and has a plentiful supply of ground water and food. The country painted by Elaine reaches from Jameson to Blackstone, over the red sand dunes, along the Blackstone ranges and over the expansive flood plains and clay pans.

This country floods after the wet season rains at the base of the ranges, water covering the land feeding the ground for the next cycle of wildflowers and grasses. Elaine's paintings are scatterings of colourful dotting marking the flood plains rich with life after the rain.

A line scores the artwork depicting the songline, the way for travelling ancestors and now replaced by a contemporary marking - the unsealed road to Jameson.

Elaine is a strong woman, colourful and proud with her wisdom and strength depicted in her works..
