JAKAYU BILJABU

Pitu

Jakayu was born at a small rock hole north of Pitu around 1937.

Her parents were both Manyjilyjarra and her father has Pitjantjatjara relatives.

Her family’s country is around Pitu, Wikirri, Rarrki, Wantili and Nyinari on the Canning Stock Route.

Jakayu travelled with her father, sister, husband, three children and other relatives at a time when the number of European people coming into Martu country was increasing.

Jakayu’s father was a proud and strong man, who remained wary of Europeans travelling along the Canning Stock Route and then creating new roads.

Eventually, Jakayu and her family decided that they would follow their families into Jigalong.

When they came across Len Beadell’s road building team, they approached him and he organised for mission staff and other Martu people to come and drive them into Jigalong.

They arrived in 1963 and Jakayu was soon working as a baker.

She later worked for rations on stations in the same region, and then lived at Strelley before returning to her country in 1982.

Jakayu continues to live at Punmu with her children and grandchildren, teaching her granddaughters about their history and country..
