Jimmy Kenny Thaiday was born in Cairns and grew up on Erub (Darnley Island) in the Eastern Torres Strait. His Tribal clan is Peiudu, one of four tribes on Erub.
Art has always been part of his life and he has worked in printing, carving, batik, etching, ghost nets and clay; it is something he enjoys doing and expressing himself through art. His inspiration for his artworks is from my heritage, livelihood and the environment, in which he lives. The cultural traditions that have been passed on through generations which he learned about has also had an influence on his work. His family has always encouraged his art practice, boosting his confidence and motivation to keep developing his ideas and techniques.
