’This story is about the two rainbow serpents in my father’s country. It’s about the river and the desert serpents.’
There was a traditional corroboree with the Walmajarri tribe, they were having culture in the desert, not far from my father’s country, which is Yakanarra. They were dancing and singing all night and all day.
“The desert serpent was very upset, this law was happening in his area. So he crept up on them, and ate up two tribal men. The two men were from the riverside. The Riverside people got upset and sang evil songs for their river serpent to come up to the desert to fight with the desert serpent. Both snakes fought all day and all night; the fighting created the two billabongs, which is seen today’’.
You can see the billabongs in the top part of the painting.

Mark Nodea says:
‘Tumurruny is an important hill in Texas Downs country, East of Warmun Community. Long time ago, my family people were living in Texas Downs Station country.
One of the men was out hunting one day and he speared a kangaroo in the lower part of the body; it didn’t kill the kangaroo but it hopped away leaving a trail of blood. The hunter followed the blood trail and found that the kangaroo had hopped to the hill Tumurrny and into the cave in the hill. The hunter followed the kangaroo into the cave, but never came out. The Kija people of Texas were starting to worry about the hunter because it was getting dark. Later in the evening, the people saw a large star going across the sky, like a big falling star. Then Tumurruny made a loud bang sound to let its’ people know that the hunter had come near it. The tribe knew that the man was stuck inside the hill.
As for today, the Tumurruny would let tribes know if a relation had passed away, by making a big bang noise. Tumurruny is a very important hill.’
