NANCY CHAPMAN

Warla (Claypan)

Nancy is about the same age I think, though here they have no birthdate! As children, Nyanjilpayi and her sister Mulyatinki walked around the area between Punmu and Kunawarritji.

Nyanjilpayi remembers this as a very difficult time when they had to walk all day and were often cold in the night.

Her family knew about the mission at Jigalong, but for many years chose to continue to live a pujiman (bush) life. Nyanjilpayi moved to Jigalong mission where she worked for many years.

She eventually left Jigalong because the mission did not allow working girls to marry.

She did station work and mined by hand with a yandy (wooden dish) for tin and other minerals.

She married fellow artist Minyowe Miller and in the early 1980s, the couple moved to Punmu to be closer to their country. Nyanjilpayi is a considered painter whose work focuses on the Punmu area as well as the country in the mid-sections of Canning Stock Route, for example around Juntujuntu (Well 30)..
