Artist | NANCY NAPURRURLA DICKSON

Nancy Napurrurla Dickson was born in Alice Springs Hospital, the closest hospital to Yuendumu, a remote Aboriginal community 290 km north-west of Alice Springs in the NT of Australia.

Nancy attended the Local school at Yuendumu, then Yirara College, an Aboriginal boarding college in Alice Springs.

After she finished school she returned to Yuendumu and in the 80’s Nancy worked at the local school in Nyirripi, an Aboriginal community 160 km north-west of Yuendumu.

She is married and has five children, four daughters and one son, and many grandchildren.

Nancy has been painting with Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation, an Aboriginal owned and governed art centre located in Yuendumu, since 2004 but it wasn’t until 2009 that she had time to paint on a regular basis.

She mainly paints her father’s Jukurrpa, Ngurlu Jukurrpa (Native Seed Dreaming), Dreamings related directly to her land, its features and the plants and animals that inhabit it.

These stories have been passed down to her by her father and his father’s father before them for millennia.

When Nancy is not painting she likes to go hunting for honey ant, witchetty grub and goanna or visiting her sisters and brother in Yuendumu.
