Artist | NATALIE PUANTULURA (dec)

Natalie Puantulura was taught to paint by her late grandparents, Jean Batiste Apuatimi and Declan Apuatimi, from whom she also learned about Tiwi culture and painting.

Natalie painted with Tiwi Design art centre on Bathurst Island up until 2004, after which she and her partner, Edward Malati Yunupingu, moved to Pirlangimpi on Melville Island and began working with Munupi Arts & Crafts.

Natalie’s explorations of Tiwi pattern and design has made her a highly sought after artist. She has exhibited in many leading galleries throughout Australia since 2002 and held her first solo exhibition in Tasmania in 2012. She also participated in the Darwin Festival 'Lighthouse' Wall Mural with five other Tiwi Artists. She was a finalist in the prestigious 20th Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award in the Works on Paper Category and again a finalist in the 33rd edition for the painting category.
