Born 6/12/1974 Language Pitjantjatjara Place of Birth: Alice Springs Home: Mimili community Born in Alice Springs to a traditional Anangu kunga (woman of the Central Deserts) and a white man, Sandra was brought up by her mother in Mimili Community, South Australia. At the local Anangu School to Year 9 equivalent, Sandra attended boarding school in Adelaide for 6 weeks at the age of 14 before becoming too homesick and returning to Mimili.

As she described it, “no family there, you knowâ€.

After her return to Mimili, Sandra started work in the Mimili Community Store, stacking shelves and unloading the weekly grocery truck, before doing cleaning and administrative support work in the Clinic, School and finally the Mimili Community Office.

The grand-daughter of a very senior Mimili woman in traditional lore, 2001 saw Sandra voted onto the Mimili Community Council.

She was elected as Chairperson (an unpaid volunteer position) in 2002.

Since then, Sandra has maintained her role of Chairperson of Mimili Community, whilst contributing to various Indigenous Associations and Executive Committees as spokesperson on behalf of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara. Her husband lives in Alice Springs.

They have one daughter, Adele.

Sandra commenced painting in Alice Springs in 2000..
