Sue Ryan was born in Cairns and as a small child, she loved making art. She now lives with her partner Greg and their dog Ralph on a property near Tumoulin on the Atherton Tablelands.
Sue’s interest in recording dimensions of psyche and life in general have led her to record eccentric, sometimes haunting or metaphysical, aspects of life in the deep north. Humour features extensively in her art, vacillating from dark to whimsical, within a wide range of metaphoric social and personal observations. Her love of animals and the natural world is evident in her work. Employing a wide range of mediums she delights in experimenting with new materials.
A graduate of Queensland College of Art where she majored in printmaking, Sue has worked as both artist and arts worker. From 2001 to 2007 she was art centre manager in the indigenous community of Lockhart River where she worked with the artists developing their skills and promoting their artwork both nationally and internationally.
In 2008, Sue was appointed to do a scoping study for Arts Queensland and the Carpentaria Ghost Net Programme (later re-branded GhostNets Australia) on the prospects of ghost nets being used as the basis for art and craft in the indigenous communities where it was being collected. Her scoping study report was a blueprint for the development of what was to become ghost net art and after handing in her report Sue was invited to take on the position of Director of the Ghost Net Art Project for GhostNets Australia. She continues to work with indigenous and non-indigenous artists to facilitate environmental community arts projects, exhibitions, workshops and cross collaboration projects.
