Joseph Jurra Tjapaltjarri was born in the desert in Western Australia in approximately 1952, near where the community of Kiwirrkura now stands.
He commenced painting for Papunya Tula Artists in 1986.
In 1999 Joseph contributed to the Kintore men’s painting as part of the Western Desert Dialysis Appeal.
Joseph Jurra Tjapaltjarris committement to his art practice has earned him solo exhibitions at Gabrielle Pizzi Galleries in Melbourne in 1988, right up to a relatively recently at Scott Livesey Galleries in 2008.
An internationally renowned artist, over the past twenty or so years Joseph has exhibited in places as diverse as Mexico City, Jerusalum, Paris, Auckland, New York, London, across Australia, and of course, in Singapore.
His pieces feature permanently in collections such as the Institute of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Australian Parliament House Art Collection, and at the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands.
In 1997 he and Turkey Tolson Tjupurrula travelled to Paris in order to create a sandpainting in conjunction with the exhibition Peintres Aborigines d’Australie at the Establissement Public du Parc de la Grand Halle de la Villette.
All in all, Joseph Jurra Tjapaltjarri has cemented his noteriety amidst both his contemporaries within Papunya Tula, as well as amongst the international art world more broadly.
